In response to the RFP published by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Amir Handelman, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Electric and Electronics Engineering and Head of the Laboratory for Applied Optics and Machine Learning, was awarded two research grants under the category of "unique ground-breaking applied research in the field of all sciences".".

The first grant was awarded to Dr. Handelman for research and development of an integrated optical artificial intelligence processor, based on bio-organic materials. "These devices are intended to be integrated into a wide variety of applications, such as medical components that can be implanted in the body, wearable optics, biological sensors, and optical communication".

The second grant was awarded to Dr. Handelman together with Prof. Ofra Beni from the School of Pharmacology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, for developing a unique technology in the field of cultured meat (meat produced in a laboratory from cell cultures instead of from the bodies of animals). Dr. Handelman explains: "The main technology is developing a system of tissue cultures combined with light-sensitive materials.

The purpose of the research is to improve the production processes of cultured meat (and quality protein). By making its production process more economical, cultured meat will be able to penetrate the food market more quickly and at a greater scale.

We also hope that the research will also be useful for the production processes for the transplant of human organs," adds Dr. Handelman, “which opens up a world of new possibilities”.

"The award by the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology to HIT attests to the high level and competitiveness of the applied research undertaken by me and my colleagues in the Faculty of Electric and Electrics Engineering and at the Institute,” concludes Dr. Handelman with pride.
