Grant from the Israeli Smart Transportation Research Center (ISTRC) awarded to Dr. Mali Sher
Dr. Mali Sher (Principal researcher) from the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Technology Management has received a two-year grant together with Prof. Itzhak Benenson from Tel Aviv University, to research road safety of electric scooters, based on spatial knowledge of road infrastructure and data from shared e-scooter companies.
Dr. Mali Sher
Electric scooters provide efficient solutions for urban transportation. They are environmentally friendly, help users avoid traffic jams, and if widely used, may reduce the impact of traffic congestion and increase urban sustainability. However, electric scooter riders are highly vulnerable road users. We will use data from shared electric scooter companies to analyze the safety of electric scooter users on roads.
The research proposes to use shared electric scooter companies' data to analyze user safety, aiming to examine the relationship between: (1) accidents involving electric scooters; (2) user riding behavior; (3) Tel Aviv infrastructure characteristics; and (4) Tel Aviv population characteristics.
Based on this analysis, the researchers will recommend improvements in infrastructure, enforcement, legislation, and education to reduce the number and severity of accidents, to enhance the safety of riders, pedestrians, and drivers.
