An article by researchers from HIT to be published in the Journal of Experimental Gerontology
The article describes a joint research done by researchers from HIT: Dmitry Patashov, Boris Shapiro, Aviran Levi and Dr. Ronen Sosnik, together with a research team from the Sourasky Medical Center’s research laboratories, studied neural patterns of human gait. The research concentrated on healthy subjects while comparing young and elderly subject-groups.
In this study, the researchers developed novel algorithms that allowed detection of gait cycle phases by processing the recorded brain activity electrical potentials using a non-invasive method (EEG). Researchers concluded that brain activation pattern of elderly had higher amplitude, but at the same time were less consistent than those of young subjects. In addition, brain activation patterns during cognitive task (Auditory Oddball Task) while walking, had shorter latency. The full article was published in Journal of Experimental Gerontology.
The researchers from HIT played a major role in developing the algorithms and data analysis in this joint study:
Dmitry Patashov – Project Coordinator and the Director of the Mathematical Modelling Laboratory at the Faculty of Sciences. Dmitry’s research concentrated on development of algorithms for data analysis and processing for medical purposes. He works in collaboration with researchers from HIT and Sourasky Medical Center on a regular basis.
Boris Shapiro – Graduate student from Faculty of Engineering, HIT, participated in the research as part of his graduation project at the Faculty of Engineering under the supervision of Dr.Ronen Sosnik and Mr. Dmitry Patashov. Boris works at "Mobileye" company as Field Engineer.
Aviran Levi – Graduate student from the Faculty of Engineering, HIT. He participated in the research as part of his graduation project at the Faculty of Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Ronen Sosnik and Mr Dmitry Patashov. Today, Aviran works at "Airspan" as Radio Integration Engineer in the field of secular technologies.
Dr. Ronen Sosnik – Head of the Department of Bio Engineering, and the Hybrid BCI Lab and a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Engineering. His research concentrates on detection and characterisation of neural signals recorded from the brain using non-invasive methods while preforming planning and imagination of hand movement in space for controlling external devices (robotic arm, for example) using only persons thoughts to aid people with disabilities due to Stroke, Sarcopenia and other muscle and neural degenerative diseases.
