The Deputy Minister of Internal Security visited HIT

The Deputy Minister of Internal Security, MK Desta Gadi Yabarkan and senior members of his bureau, paid their first visit to HIT.

The guests were received by  HIT's President, Prof. Eduard Yakubov, and the Institute's CEO Mr. Samuel Goldberg.
HIT's vision is to take an active part in integrating the studies and higher education of the Ethiopian community in Israel. As part this activity, senior members of the institute met with the Deputy Minister of Internal Security, MK Desta Gadi Yabarkan, who also holds the title of Commissioner for the Integration of Ethiopians in Israel.


In a meeting that took place in a warm and cordial atmosphere, an immediate bond was established between Prof. Yakubov and Deputy Minister Yabarkan. The parties discussed the options of cooperation in the fields of academic training for students of the Ethiopian community as well as cooperation with the various professional bodies under the Ministry of internal Security. Another topic that came up at the meeting, was professional technological training of members of the community within the framework of the School of Certificate Studies.

Because HIT is known for its strong ties with the industry and the adaptation of its curricula to market demands, the Deputy Minister proposed to develop a unique and joint project that connects the young people of the Ethiopian community, to  academic studies and industry. The President of the institute and the deputy minister agreed on a joint appeal to key players in the industry regarding the employment of the Institute's graduates from the Ethiopian community, both in technology companies upon graduation, so that students from the Ethiopian community who will begin academic or professional studies, at the institute, will have a guaranteed and long-term job in the industry.


Deputy Minister Yabarkan was given a tour of the institute and took a close look at the research and academic activities in the institute's laboratories, including the robotics center, the 3D printing lab, the nanomaterials lab and others. In addition, the Deputy Minister was presented with unique projects done at the institute related to the security forces and law enforcement system, such as an innovative task allocation algorithm that streamlines and accelerates the police response to public calls, and a system that helps teach police officers to deal with people with disabilities.

At the end of the visit, which lasted longer than planned, the Deputy Minister said that he was impressed with the academic work done at the institute in general and the specific measures that the institute is taking to integrate members of the Ethiopian community into the academic world in particular. In addition, the Deputy Minister said that the strong desire of the institute to help integrate members of the Ethiopian community into the academia and  the community in general, is clearly visible. He added that he shares the vision of the Institute for the advancement of education, values and Zionism in addition to academic education. The Deputy Minister said also that he would be happy to help create a collaboration between the Institute and the University of Addis Ababa.


The visit can be summarized as one that created additional options for the institute to assist to the integration of members of the Ethiopian community in Israel.


The Deputy Minister was accompanied by his Chief of Staff Mr. Tamir Elazar and his spokesman Mr. Lior Gur.


On behalf of the Institute, in addition to the President and CEO,attended the meeting, Mr. Israel Ochanov, Head of the School of Certificate Studies, Mr. Leonid Al-Zarov, journalist, Ms. Tony Levy, Head of External Relations at the President's Office and Mr. Ilya Yugodav.
