DR. REFAEL BARKAN APPOINTED VICE-PRESIDENT
HIT is proud to announce that Dr. Refael Barkan, Head of the Research, Innovation and International Ventures Authority, was appointed to the position of Vice-President for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and International Affairs.
Dr. Barkan has headed the Authority since its founding, and entered into 100 collaboration agreements with academic institutions from more than 30 nations around the world.
He founded and led the initiative to establish a unique program in Digital Medical Technologies, the first of its kind in Israel and the world, which was approved by the Council for Higher Education and opened this academic year.
Upon his appointment, Dr. Barkan stated that he sees that HIT possesses the standards and excellence of a full-blown university, and in the long run, believes that this will come to fruition. “We are planning to open new and relevant degree programs and are invigorating the campus by incorporating elements of innovation and entrepreneurship into academic programming throughout.
Within 3 years, HIT is planning to establish its 6th faculty in health disciplines/digital medical technologies which will serve as an academic and research spearhead for these fields in Israel.
Dr. Refael Barkan holds an undergraduate and graduate degree in Computer Science from Bar-Ilan University and Hebrew University. He earned his MD in Neuroscience and Ph.D in Brain Science at Hebrew University.
He was a lecturer at the College of Management, where he established the Bio-Informatics Laboratory in the School of Computer Science.
He joined the staff of HIT 6 years ago and was one of the founders of the Cyber Security Center and the Multidisciplinary Assistive Design Laboratory (MADE). He headed the Research Authority and established “FUTURE”, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center.
