"VARIANTS"

The final student projects presented in the 2021 Graduate Exhibition spotlight the works of the younger design generations from the 3 departments of the Faculty of Design: Interior Design, Communication Design and Industrial Design. These works are a culmination of their educational journey in the Faculty, allowing them to draw from the professional toolbox of knowledge and skills which they acquired over their course of study.  

 

The extreme times in which we live can be characterized by dramatic changes in health, environment, technology and socio-economic realities. This stands side by side with rapid developments, which together, require flexibility of thought, creativity and responsibility on the part of the designers who must respond to these changes. This year’s Exhibition displays the wealth of ideas and visual approaches developed by these students over the course of their journey. The current point in time impacts the world of design and its inherent potential, and affects the way in which designers bring their respective imagination to the fore.

The projects this year are diverse in nature, and examine a multitude of different approaches and contexts. Nevertheless, they share a common thread defined by the desire to improve, to make more efficient, to provoke discussion and in this way to advance and create real value.

They push the boundaries of the field and their various interfaces and points of contact to their limits. You can find personal projects that combine technology, movement, motivation and enjoyment. Among them, you can find projects that deal with memory, personal stories, an examination of the past versus the present and the future, reviews and also quite a bit of optimism.
 

 

Dean of the Faculty of Design, Prof. David Rawet: The term “challenging year” has been overused to the point of losing its true meaning. After a year aptly named the "Corona Year", the pandemic has simply become part of our everyday lives.
Design, which always takes place in an environment of high uncertainty, has once again proven that it knows how to deal with a deck that is repeatedly re-shuffled. To paraphrase Einstein: "you don't have to think about the future, it comes too fast anyway". Taking a note from the great scientist, we in the Faculty have taken the approach that changing circumstances should be dealt with in the here and now.
The careful interweaving of the very ‘fabric’ of design – its products, buildings and the world of information around us in all its many aspects – in which, as in all ‘fabric’, the holes comprise a larger area than the woven area of the material itself -  it is up to designer to fill the "holes" and commit to bring technology, environment, and especially user=affinity to the fore.

The Graduate Exhibition demonstrates that despite the whirlwind of circumstances around us, the Faculty did not let anything other than the notion of Design divert it from its path.

 

Arch. Udi Cramsky: In recent years, the status and role of interior designers in the planning and design community in Israel has been continually sharpened. We bring the interior design profession to the forefront as an integral factor in contemporary social and urban developments, as a means to expand the local and global contexts of projects and to examine programs in a layered context.

 

We define environmental, social and ecological aspects that are affected by this very urban change and the need to provide a broad response, on a scale that knows how to change. Our students tackle these final projects with these questions in mind, and plan the interior spaces with a look at the environment and the metropolis, rethinking the use of buildings, integrated social programs, the perception of space and material related to the capabilities we develop in the Department of Interior Design.

We see here projects dealing with the question of material, and how its expression changes according to a change in planning paradigms, such as sophisticated digital tools that affect the language of planning and vision of the methods of execution and implementation of future projects. 
 

Mor Tamir / Sustainable Block /Supervisor: Architect Yoram Nidam

 

A new urban block that enables sustainable living through urban agriculture. 
The block represents a module that produces spatial, conscious, programmatic change altering the perception of housing within the city. 
It presents urban agriculture not only as a means of growth but as a tool for change and growth of the city, landscape and climate, through education and bringing people closer to nature as an integral part of a new environment.

The residential block creates a mix between housing, work, leisure and education that enables a dynamic lifestyle providing the community with social capital and food security. The block is a module for new urbanity that can be replicated until a sustainable city is created.

Adi Matan / Student Village in the Pyramid Building in Be'er Sheva /Supervisor: Arch. Udi Cramsky

 

"The Village in the Pyramid" is an urban student village in Be'er Sheva, which allows for a joint route and public areas alongside private spaces. From any point in the space, you can reach all the ends of the building - both in height and width - in order to create movement that expands and changes the points of view.

Ella Gal Nur / The Old Ancient /Supervisor: Arch. Nini Warschawski

 

 

A new street concept in the Old City of Be'er Sheva that creates a connection between existing local businesses and guest rooms, in order to strengthen the existing system on the street and define it. By utilizing the city’s practice of dismantling abandoned buildings in the Old City, we are able to create another system parallel to the Ottoman grid, which in turn penetrates and revives it.

 

 

Luka Or: In this period of change and challenges, it is important to remember the role of product designers as agents of change. It is important to examine every aspect of this work - from the cultural-creative end to the most industrial. Product design should be seen through the prism of mental flexibility, aspiration for improvement, and most importantly education for change and social responsibility. The projects described herein reflect the students who developed them as young and professional designers, each of which makes a personal statement and projects a vision - for themselves and the different directions they have learned to apply. 

 

Talia Loboton / LUMINANCE / Supervisor: Naama Steinbock

 

The project deals with the creation of a new language for lighting fixtures that emphasizes innovation, 3D and aesthetics in a combination of textile and polymer in three-dimensional printing.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Stratasys, a company that develops, manufactures and markets three-dimensional printers on a global scale and specializes in 'POLYJET' printing technology. The technology is considered the optimal method for printing on textiles because the printed polymer is liquid, absorbed in the fabric fibers and reacts to exposure to UV light, all of which makes the polymer inseparable from the textile.

Beyond the colors and shapes that the print produces in the light fixtures, its main purpose here is to create a selective rigidity that produces structural strength. This significantly reduces printing time and turns the manufacturing process using a 3D printer into an industrial tool for everything.

Shir Heled/ About Death / Supervisor: Luka Or

 

The project summarizes a year-long research campaign which aspires to bring a discourse on death into the mainstream of our daily lives, based on the notion that an open discussion about death can allow us a more complete lifestyle and a different and even positive end-of-life experience. Shir chose to present the journey through a five-part book, each of which touches on an issue she found relevant to the time and place in which we live. The book begins at the point of death and from there goes back to 'life' through questions about objects being bequeathed by the dying to loved ones - a kind of preparation for the next separation we will experience and a look at the cycles of life and death. At the end of each chapter, an object is displayed that is relevant to the ‘issue’ around which the chapter centers. The same objects seek to frame emotional stories through the material.

Mendel Achoels / 10 Square /Supervisor: Ofer Zik

 

A modular and portable system for producing and creating music. 
This product contains all the tools needed to create a complete song from A-Z, which includes the means for creating sound-like synthesizers, samplers, and abilities for composing and constructing a song. The products available in the market today are limited, and do not allow the process of creating music that is both mobile and intuitive as well – in essence, a ‘one or the other’ choice.
10 Square allows the user to put together a user-friendly and portable product according to his musical preferences and style.

 

 

Zachi Diner: This year's Graduate Exhibition provides a glimpse into a variety of projects that present different and innovative applications exploring the broad field of visual communication.
Throughout their four years of study, each of the students in the Department is engaged in the search for inspiration and meaning, in personal discovery and the maintenance of the tools and skills that motivate him or her to succeed. Each and every one of the students strives to maximize their potential and connect the knowledge they have gained to significant events and visual experiences that end up in their final student project.  
This year’s exhibition showcases the conceptual and visual richness acquired in this journey. The point in time we are in affects the world of design and its inherent potential, and affects the way each designer brings his or her imagination to reality. The flexibility of designers today allows anyone involved in the field to find the world of content that suits them and in which they specialize, the tools with which they choose to produce and the mediums in which the connection with the target audience will be created.

Over the last few difficult years, graduates and the industry itself has become more strongly aware that engaging with challenges that stretch creativity as well as dealing with uncertainty and entrepreneurial thinking are one of the important tools needed to grow and prosper. The theme of the Exhibition therefore takes on additional meaning. “Variants” is now a concept that has become significant in our lives.

 

Michel Hachiashvili / Animation series in Tiktok / Supervisor: Bob Orel

 

An interactive animated web series in Tiktok which deals with self-criticism and the person's perception of himself as a ‘loser’. Michelle presents the phenomenon in the series through Liz's "real self" and "ideal self" - a young pink-haired dancer who strives to reach the coveted first row from the fourth row, while dealing simultaneously with her self-criticism on various issues. Eventually, she learns to let her ‘real self’ promote her and not stop her. Between the plot episodes, there are various challenges designed for the young target audience for whom the series was created.

Avner Aden / Digital World This World / Supervisor: Oded Ezer

 

A smart and opinionated generation is growing up here that wants to keep up to date and be politically involved, but there is just no way to accomplish this. Now, 30 years after it closed down, the defunct "This World" ( Ha Olam Ha Ze) is coming to life as a contemporary and refreshing news interface, tailored to the way our generation consumes content. The design of this new interface draws from the visual and conceptual DNA of the original weekly and includes the revival of the weekly sections, the design of fonts inspired by its sensational headlines, and a contemporary twist with animated gifs and images taken from current internet culture.

Tal Lindenfeld / "Void" - Scream and let go / Supervisor: Zachi Diner

 

“Void” - an interactive space experience, which asks the participant to shout in order to release stress.
The participants enter the space alone, where they encounter a voice interface which conveys a number of choices to them for introspection and finally, asks them to shout. The radiation on the walls of the space responds to the duration and intensity of the shout and thus encourages the participants to continue to release their emotions.
