A research laboratory for mathematical design at HIT, the only one of its kind in Israel

A unique, multidisciplinary research laboratory, the only one of its kind in Israel, designed for outstanding students, began operating at HIT and is designed for the study of mathematical objects through visual tools, while combining mathematics, design and computer sciences.

Dr. Gol

The laboratory is headed by Dr. Shai Gol, a lecturer in the Department of Applied Mathematics and is located in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies headed by Dr. Nava Shaked.
The laboratory's research products are presented at conferences, exhibitions and published as articles in selected international journals.

The activities that take place in the laboratory, implement the institute's vision on the subject of multidisciplinary studies and the integration and synergy between the various faculties and departments at the institute.

"The idea began to mature in my mind during a course called "Symmetry and fractals", which I have been teaching for a number of years, which is a mathematics course for non- mathematicians, taught in the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies," says Dr. Gol. Thanks to the support of the institute's president, Prof. Eduard Yakubov, and the head of the Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Internationalization Authority, Dr. Rafael Barkan, the laboratory was established. It collaborates with Bar Ilan University, King's College in the UK and the Weizmann Institute.

Shachar Rosenstein, a 3rd student in the Department of Industrial Design, is studying in the laboratory following a "Symmetry and fractals" course she took: "I really like the combination of math and design and see the possibilities of combining the two as an excellent opportunity to be exposed to this multidisciplinary advantage she says."

An "Open Call" was issued for students from all the faculties and departments at HIT that are interested in taking an active part in a multidisciplinary and groundbreaking research with an emphasis on the interaction between the worlds of science, mathematics and design.
