Professional Development Program for Power Systems Engineers Launched

First-of-its-Kind Program with Israel Railways, Israel Electric Company and NTA.

Green transportation and advanced infrastructure development has increased the need for engineers trained in these advanced means of ‘people movement’. For the first time in Israel –HIT’s Faculty of Electronic and Electric Engineering and these 3 public transport giants are launching a unique professional development program especially designed to train green transportation engineers.

The program came about in light of the the rapidly changing transport landscape in Israel, and the dearth of Power Systems engineering specialists who are trained in Rail Electrification. It is open to electrical and electronics engineering graduates with a specialization in Strong Current Power Systems, as well as to fourth-year students pursuing specialization in Power Systems.

Graduates of the HIT program will gain extensive engineering and professional knowledge and will have the ability to integrate and lead in the electric train industry while, at the same time, developing this emerging field in Israel.

Within the framework of the program, participants will study a broad range of relevant subjects: Structure of Electrical System for Railway Electrification, DC, AC (Traction Motors) train engines, propulsion and electronic power systems in electric trains, safety and standards, electro-mechanical design of elevation networks to feed the train. They will also implement practical stages of a final project and acquire first-hand knowledge through field trips and site visits.

It advances the Faculty's vision to be in the forefront of smart and green transportation training in Israel. The importance of green transportation and renewable energies are the future of engineering, and Israeli engineers require these professional tools in order to allow them to assume their position as national and world experts.’

Eli Elisha, Director of the Projects Execution, Dan Division, discusses the Israel Electric Company: "This is a joint venture between industry and academia, which will establish a much-needed engineering infrastructure for the planning, execution, maintenance, and operating of electricity systems which feed heavy and light trains, helping all the while to preserve environmental and sustainable values."

Avraham Rabuchin, Director of the Dan and Coastal Network Division at the Israel Electric Corporation: "Electric rail transportation is undergoing tremendous development and it is important to provide a ‘made-in-Israel’ engineering solution which addresses these issues.. The new program is a challenge both to students and this new field of application which is being created”.
