The Faculty draws heavily on its state-of-the-art infrastructure to provide a hands-on learning ambience for students as well as a well-equipped research environment for its faculty and graduate students.
In these facilities, students are able to apply their theoretical knowledge to practical and real-life experimentation, thus reinforcing the approach of ‘learning by doing’.
Faculty and graduate students are able to advance their research projects within these facilities, enabling them to compete for grants and participate in collaborative projects with colleagues in Israel and around the world.

Research
The Faculty has on its staff highly professional faculty members with strong scientific achievements and international reputations in research as well as extensive experience in teaching and supervising M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in a variety of specialization areas.
Multidisciplinary research is conducted in advanced fields such as optical communications, radio-over-fiber technology, smart grid technology, bio-engineering, renewable energy, and more.
Close industry ties provide a unique opportunity to involve industry professionals in joint research projects, as well as in mentoring B.Sc. and M.Sc. final projects.
Access to well-equipped laboratories either in the Faculty itself or in industry, along with close collaboration with companies in the cutting-edge fields of power electronics, optical communications, bio-engineering, photovoltaics, electro-optics, and micro-electronics, gives the research teams a decisive edge in their work, as well as a distinctive synergy which guides the development of new research programs that meet industry demands.
The Faculty maintains ongoing interaction with other higher education institutions in Israel and abroad. Faculty members actively participate in international projects and are invited to prestigious international scientific conferences. They regularly publish the results of their most advanced research as chapters in books, and they are regular reviewers for prestigious peer-reviewed international scientific journals.
Centers
The Faculty encourages active research undertakings in all of its advanced laboratories. Below are two examples of Centers of Excellence:
The Bio-Engineering Center of Excellence
Established as a roof framework for multi-disciplinary bio-engineering research, the Center for Bio-Engineering provides a state-of-the-art interface for biology, engineering and the physical sciences, and draws from HIT’s strengths in electronics and communication engineering, computer sciences and computational/experimental systems. It serves as a ‘home’ for a cross-section of faculty from around the campus, and as a vigorous environment for training a talented cadre of students who will become Israel’s next bio-engineering leaders.
The Center’s focus is on developing new approaches in applied medical technology which address real medical problems and advance the med-tech industry. Issues being addressed include, but are not limited to:
- Automatic detection of cerebral stroke
- Efficient non-invasive brain-computer interfaces for disabled patients
- New diagnostic tools for breast mammography
- Early detection of thyroid cancer
- Study of function and activation of blood platelets and potential structural mutation therein
- Telemedicine
- Early detection and monitoring of dementia
- Medical data-mining
The Center includes 3 Research Labs, each employing different non-invasive neuro-imaging modalities:
- Electroencephalography (EEG)
- Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI)
- Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)
This team studies brain diseases, in collaboration with clinicians and researchers from Tel Aviv University, The Weizmann Institute, Tel-Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, and Wolfson Medical Center. Research focuses on healthy individuals as well as patients with Parkinson's disease, ALS, Mild Cognitive impairment, Stroke and Depression. The group is the only one in Israel that has expertise in these three modalities.
The Renewable Energy and Smart Grid Center of Excellence
The research being conducted in this Center is unique in Israel. The focus is on conducting studies and novel research in the fields of renewable energy and smart grid and includes academic staff members as well as industrial companies, engineers from the industry, and students. The Center utilizes both teaching and research labs for renewable energies and smart grid. At present, smart grid research taking place in the Center is financed by the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of Energy and Water as well as the Chief Scientist of the Ministry of the Economy.
